A political controversy has erupted in Dhupguri over an alleged violation of the election code of conduct, with opposition parties accusing the Trinamool Congress-affiliated labour wing Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress (INTTUC) of holding a meeting at a government facility. The gathering reportedly took place at the Dhupguri Inspection Bungalow under the Jalpaiguri Zilla Parishad.
According to complaints, the meeting was organised in support of TMC candidate Nirmal Chandra Roy, with the presence of party leaders and INTTUC members, including construction workers and Toto drivers. Opposition parties, including the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharatiya Janata Party, alleged that conducting such a gathering at a government venue during the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct is a clear violation. Leaders from both parties have filed complaints with the Election Commission of India, questioning the role of the administration and alleging selective enforcement of rules. They claimed that while opposition parties face restrictions, the ruling party is allowed to hold meetings without proper permissions.
The TMC has denied the allegations, stating that it was an internal organisational meeting and not an election rally. Meanwhile, local authorities confirmed that a complaint has been received and an inquiry is underway. The outcome of the investigation is now being closely watched as political tensions continue to rise in the poll-bound state.
